I have to be honest, when I first heard of Snapchat and took a look at that cheesy logo; I figured there was no way this would last. I thought the idea was cool and unique but people would get tired of creating content that would just disappear.

The only groups I thought that would probably find this platform intriguing were young people that were trying to keep their parents out of their business and adults that had some mischievous things in mind. So I figured if those were the only two groups that were going to use Snapchat then there was no way it would compete with the Facebooks and Twitters of the world.

Boy was I wrong. Not only is Snapchat a success but they recently passed Twitter with over 150 million daily active users. Snapchat also reported that users spend 25 to 30 minutes per day looking at snaps or short stories and pics of people’s lives. I would have never imagined this two years ago.

Snapchat for Business

Like everything else in the world, if entrepreneurs and marketers hear that something is the new hot thing, they’re going to figure out how use it to their advantage.

Using Snapchat as a marketing tool is different from other social media platforms. The content is going to disappear in 24 hours so you don’t want to spend too much time trying to create masterpieces. Instead use your other social media outlets to drive your followers to your Snapchat. Once you have them there, make sure you are giving them information that is unique to Snapchat. For example you should use your Snapchat as a place to give out free offers, discount codes or even tips and tricks that can’t be found anywhere else.

Make it Fun

Even though you’re using Snapchat for business, make sure you’re snaps are fun to watch. Most people don’t go to Snapchat to hear boring lectures, they want to be entertained. Use cool filters and show your followers a little of your personality.

Include your staff; especially if they’re young. Young people love to do Snapchat takeovers. This gives your audience a chance to meet the people behind the scene.

Don’t Do Too Much

The cool thing about Snapchat is that it allows you to do so much. They have really cool filters; you can add emojis on the screen and even show your artistic skills. One of the mistakes that some business owners make is trying to do too much.

If you’re not a good drawer, don’t draw. If using filters doesn’t match your personality, stay away from them. Don’t try to be something you’re not, you’ll end up playing yourself (DJ Khaled voice).
